Food Review and Office Space

MINI FOOD REVIEW: Well, the steak at Shawn's last night was very good, but not his best effort. I thought it needed more rub. I guess we have to have Michele do that. I'd give the steak a B+/A-. We also had corn, and Shawn's mushrooms, which were absolutely delicious! Nice Job Shawn! I give the mushrooms an A+.

KILL ME:
I've had a really shitty day at work. I don't know why, but I've just been unable to concentrate all day and felt kind of depressed. Luckily we're in the basement and not in a highrise; otherwise it could have been a bad day for those poor people on the streets below my window. I guess work will do that to you sometimes. I haven't even had the motivation to post on the blog. But I'm starting to feel guilty about it, so I thought I'd try to post something today...but then I found a website of Office Space audio clips, and my motivation to share this with everyone shot right up! Enjoy! And please check out this other Office Space related website if you're into this movie as much as I am....greatest comedy EVER! Especially funny when you're sitting in your cube wanting to escape!

New Music

Picked up some new music yesterday. The new self titled Pearl Jam album, and the new Anti-Flag album "For Blood and Empire."
My first impressions after one listen is that Pearl Jam has really lost their edge over the last 6-8 years. All of their stuff sounds about the same. There's no bite to it. Its still okay, but its just what what they used to be in the 90's. They've fallen down to 'good background music.'

Anti-Flag, for those who don't know, is hardcore punk. There's not much you can do with that type of music to make it sound original, but I still really like Anti-Flag. Angry, very political punk rock never seems to go out of style. I recommend checking out Anti-Flag if you haven't.

I'll post again tomorrow. MarxistGopher is still alive. I'm heading over to Shawns tonight for some BBQ steak...yum! I'll give my food review of Shawns cooking tomorrow.

Took the Day Off Work - At home Relaxing and Cleaning

Still no advancement in the technical problems of the blog. I'll have to wait until next week and seek some expierenced help.

I decided to call in sick to work today. I don't think I could take another day of sitting in that little cube staring at census data and contemplating jumping out the window. I never did it because we're on the first floor, so I'd proably just cut myself on the glass. Don't worry, I'll be back in that cube Tuesday morning.

Maybe I should go back to school for web design....maybe not...

Tonight I'm off to see the new Brave New Workshop show, "See Dick Shoot: and Other Signs of the Apocolypse," with Brianne. Have I mentioned before that I love the Brave New Workshop! I highly recommend it to everyone....well, for those that like to laugh at least. Do you like to laugh?

There's not really anything going on right now thats inspiring me to write about. Actually I have been following the stadiums debate in the Legislature fairly closely, but thats a long post and I have to get some cleaning and other misc. housework done this afternoon. How about I promise to actually post something on the weekend and I can get some stuff done today? Deal? Okay, sounds good. I'll go on my stadium rant sometime this weekend.

So please, keep checking back. My hit counter has been lagging the last few days. I'm off my 40 a day pace.

A Post of Substance

Well, it depends on your definition of substance...

I've been working on the blog basically non-stop for the past 24 hours. Now I'm stuck on a problem with the left "links" sidebar, so I decided it was time to step back for a while before I go crazy. Don't worry, The MarxistGopher Report is very much alive and kicking. As soon as I get this damn overhaul completed I can focus more on the substance of the blog...basically my daily rants and insults.

I haven't been up to much this week except the blog. I've watched a ton of movies...none of them that impressive though. Tonight is the big MPC Pictionary night on the Big Board in the break room. I'm pumped. A good time will be had by all. And I've got tickets to the Brave New Workshop tomorrow night. "See Dick Shoot" is the production. I'm expecting hilarity! So much hilarity...

Then Saturday I have the pleasure of going over to Matts to mow the lawn...or should I say the hillside. Not expecting so much hilarity with that activity.

WELCOME TO THE SPORTS WASTELAND

Well, we've now officailly entered the summer wasteland that is baseball season. Every good and true sport has officially ended and we all must struggle to survive until the Vikings break camp in late July. I know, I know, many of you will say.."but Andy, the NBA and NHL playoffs are going on right now." But lets be real, watching the NBA of NHL is about as intriguing as a John Kerry speech. So we'll all just have to find other ways to fill our empty lives with entertainment for the next 3 months. Go outside in the heat and fight the crowds to enjoy a day by the lakes; spend lots of money eating and drinking with the other humans; watch predictable movies on that brand new expensive TV you just bought; or just gorge yourself and hunker down in you bed for 3 months of hibernation....just remember to turn off the A/C before you do...you don't want to waste all that electricity.

The beginning of the new MarxistGopher

Greeting faithful readers. You may have noticed some major changes to The MarxistGopher Report in the past 24 hours. This is the beginning of the major overhaul of the site. I've completely changed the format of the blog from a 2 column to a three column, with an entirely different layout and text style. I'm working on the backround and setting up all the original links and extras from the old blog right now. Then I'll begin adding all the new bells and whistles to the site, which will hopefully create an exceptional experience for my visitors. I felt the need to expand to the 3 column because the content of the site was beginning to outgrow the 2 column format. The biggest new content addition(outside of the very impressive astetic improvements) will be the MarxistGopher movie database. It will include every movie in the MarxistGopher collection along with my rating and a link to all the info you could possible want about every film. It may be fairly crude when I first set it up, but I'll be working on improvements as I learn more. I've learned a ton about web design and HTML code in the last few days alone. So hopefully I'll only get better at it.

Please let me know what you think of the new format and background by commenting on this post. (Oh, and I will be changing the text to white so you can actually read it over the black background.) I hope you enjoy it as much as I'm enjoying doing it!

Major Construction

Oh, god, it could be ugly for a couple of days.

A Rainy NFL Draft Weekend

Happy Tuesday everyone! I'm back at work and back to blogging. Did anyone else think this weekend just plain sucked. It rained for 4 straight days. Apparently I need to take some more happy pills because all that rain made me lethargic and sad. I think I watched 8 movies over the weekend, 4 on Sunday alone!

But I feel like I should address the NFL draft that happened last Saturday. I spent 9 hours sitting on the couch watching and recording every pick in my notebook. At some point near the end of the 2nd round I just got sick of it and stopped my record keeping. Shortly after that I got sick of wathcing the draft all together and decided to watch a movie instead. God damn I spend a lot of time sitting on the couch that day!

Anyway, to the actual picks. I was shocked and appauled that Texans passed on Bush to take Mario Williams. On the other hand I like tha Saints slightly better than the Texans, so i'm glad they got Bush instead. I thought Arizona and Green Bay probably had the best drafts, and Buffalo and Detriot had the worst. Why the fuck would the Lions pass on Leinert?! The Lions have needed a QB for the past 30 years; and while I'm not a big Leinert fan, it seems like that would be the time to take the risk of taking a QB high!? Am I right people? I won't even go into the Bills stupidity. I'll just say that I think Marv Levy may be suffering from some dementia. McCargo in the 1st round?! What?! Why am I a Billls fan?

Okay, now to the Vikings. I was okay with their first round picks, although I think they should have traded up to get Cutler. They NEED a QB! Johnson is old....and he sucks. So, Greenway(fine)....Griffin(fine)....the New Mexico C in the 2nd(WTF?) Ugh, the Vikings basically blew the rest of the draft. I was pissed....and then I remembered I'm a Gopher fan....and got depressed instead. I don't know what to think about the QB they took from Alabama State...Travaris Jackson. I'm intreagued only because I don't know anything about him. If I did, I'd probably be more upset....I'm sure he'll be a bust.(and they traded up to pick this guy, ugh)

Laurence Maroney to the Patriots #21 overall! Higher than I thought he would go...and I kind of wish he would have gone to the Colts, it would have been a better fit for his running style, but I'll think he'll do fine at New England. Hey, at least all my Maroney stuff just increased in value!

Anyway, i was going to give my explanation of the new MarxistGopher movie Database that I'll be adding to the site. (it will be the best part of The MarxistGopher Report), but I don't have the time right now. I really NEED to finish the reel I'm working on before lunch, I'm so far behind. Plus Brad Jarvis is stopping by soon to play some baseball with Mark and I for a little while, so that'll kill a lot of good work time too. Anyway, once I get caught up this afternoon I'll post about the Movie Database and other events.

Peace and Love,
MarxistGopher

A Little Joke for Your Friday

All the organs of the body were having a meeting, trying to decide who was the one in charge. "I should be in charge," said the brain , "because I run all the body's systems, so without me nothing would happen". "I should be in charge," said the blood, "because I circulate oxygen all over so without me you'd all waste away." "I should be in charge," said the stomach," because I process food and give all of you energy." "I should be in charge," said the legs, "because I carry the body wherever it needs to go." "I should be in charge," said the eyes, "because I allow the body tosee where it goes." "I should be in charge," said the rectum, "Because I'm responsible for waste removal."All the other body parts laughed at the rectum and insulted him, so in a huff, he shut down tight. Within a few days, the brain had a terrible headache, the stomach was bloated, the legs got wobbly, the eyes got watery, and the blood was toxic. They all decided that the rectum should be the boss. The moral of the story? The asshole is usually in charge!!

MarxistGopher Exclusive - New Vikings Uniforms

The new uni's won't be officially unveiled until 6pm tonight, but The MarxistGopher Report was able to get, through unnamed sources, images of how they look a few hours ahead of time. I don't care for them....what's with the white stripe down the sides of the jersey?! We're the fucking Denver Broncos! Too much white, not enough yellow. I'm afraid to see what the helmets look like. What do you all think?

Broken Down Bowlers.....with no money

Ho-hum, another day another dollar.
Another weekend ends, another week begins.
Working for the weekend...etc, etc.

Since i'm back and work and bored out of my frickin' mind, it's time for another post. Isn't it funny how you only hear from MarxistGopher when he's at work? Hmmmm....makes you think.

Don't worry Denise, weekends just seem to be my down time. I haven't given up yet. It would be more fun ig more people commented on my posts, but lets be real, I'm not saying anything that interesting. So I don't blame you. I'm probably losing a reader a day ;)

I wanted to tell the story of my night of bowling last Thursday. It's been too long to give a detailed report, but I'll give the brief version. I had a great time! It was a lot of fun! I got in 6 hours of bowling (from 6:00-Midnight) for $7. Talk about getting your moneys worth! Jason Johnson went with me and we met Brianne there. We bowled roughly 3 games and drank a pitcher of Miller Lite....i got as little buzzed. After Jason left I bowled a game with Brianne and then Jess from the MPC came with her boyfriend and we bowled a couple more games. When we finally left just before 12:00 is when it really got interesting.....

The drunk in the next lane came over and started hitting on Brianne; which was very emasculating, since I was sitting next to her all night! Geez, how did he know we wern't together...even though we weren't...but how does he know that!? Then, after we head out, Brianne's car won't start. I've never seen anyone who's luck is as bad as hers with cars, buses, and trains....basically transportation in general. She's had more things break down then I have time to write about here. Though I can't understand why this car wouldn't start. I mean, thats a nice looking car. That girl is RICH! Anyway, i ended up giving her a ride home and she came back the next day and her car strarted up. (Apparently it was a wiring problem and the rain that night had caused the problem. The next day it had dried out and started right up). So that was the night! It was really a lot of fun. I gave it a 9!

That's about all that's going on right now. I had a pretty boring weekend or TV watching. I actually got so bored yesterday I came into work to play baseball for 15 minutes and then went home. Wow! I need to find something else to do on the weekends, especially that Monday off. That's the problem with having a weekday off work. All your friends are working, and there's ain't much to do. This is especially true when you're poor, like me! I was able to sell the 7 jerseys on eBay for $901 + $70 for shipping(i ripped them off) - actual shipping costs - eBay fees = rougly $900\2 (gotta split it with Matt) = $450 for me. But I bought those Gopher Football Season tickets at the Spring Game saturday ($390). And that was with the 20% discount! My seats suck too. They're in the corner of the endzone by the student section down close to the field. Oh well, I won't be sitting in them anyway. I'll give the crappy games away and sell the good ones on eBay to make some of my money back. It's all about the priority for the new stadium!

That reminds me, I have to post something along with my Spring Game photos. Maybe I'll tackle that one tomorrow. I guess this post wan't that interseting either. Oh well, you'll have to wait until something interesting happens in my life or I become motivated to talk about something besides my daily life and sports.

Ah, the new MarxistGopher Report, meaningless rants. I might post again this afternoon to make up for my weekend of neglect. But I warn you, it will be meaningless....

MarxistGopher Update - Poverty, Gopher Football, & Bowling

So, I have $400 to my name right now. I'm poor. No, not just poor, fucking poor. I'm selling 7 football and hockey jerseys on eBay right now because I need the cash. They're selling for roughly $775 right now, and end on Sunday. I know that sounds like a lot of money, but once you subtract the eBay fees and I split the profits with Matt(we own these together...long story), we're probably talking about $300-$350. As long as nothing happens to Spitfire in the next 6 months I should be fine.(Vet bills have killed me in the last year)

The problem really is Gopher Football. The spring game is coming up this Saturday at 11am at the Metrodome(thats my plug). While it is a free event, they are selling public season tickets for a 20% discount at the game. I've never had my own season tickets in the past(I've always gone with Matt), but I'm thinking about getting my own for 2 reasons: 1. So I can get some seating priority when the new stadium is built. 2: While I'm keeping my priority I can sell the single game tickets and hopefully get my money back or even make some small profit. So I have to come up with $360 somehow to buy those tickets on Saturday. Hello plastic!

Okay, so lets assume I find a way to get through the season ticket issue. In June, it looks like the Athletic department will be having their semi-annual equipment sale....drool. This can get very expensive, especially if they have football and hockey jerseys...drool. I'm not planning on buying much, but we'll see if that holds when I show up and see all those jerseys hanging on those racks.

So fine, lets even say I find a way to mentally and financially struggle through both of these problems. Now the University has announced that the Gophs will be wearing 1960 throwback uniforms for the North Dakota State game this fall, and then auctioning off those uniforms afterwards. My God! I have to have a couple of those unis! Ahhh! So as you can see, being a collector of Gopher Football equipment is not an acceptable hobby for someone with my financial situation. But hey, what do I do? Thats what I Love? Aren't those beautiful jerseys?

But anyway....I digress....

Nothing really exciting going on with me this week. I've just been staying home watching the teli. I'm really into the TV show "House," and just got the first season on DVD from Netflix. I've been wathing those episodes one after another every night this week. Tonight I'm going bowling....yeah, thats right, bowling....with Brianne and Jason at Nokomis Lanes for Briannes 'Y' group thingy. I don't know, one of the things shes involved in. I assume it's for a good cause? I'm really kind of nervous about it b/c; I really suck at bowling and don't want to make an ass of myself(some macho thing); and there's going to be a lot people I don't know there, which is scary :( Hopefully I'll be feeling alright. I got violently ill right after lunch today. I'll spare you the details, but it weren't good! But I'm feeling better now :)

Now I'm heading home. I need to recover from a day at the MPC before I can venture out in public again. Sorry this post was so boring. I'll have something more interesting to post about tomorrow....maybe ;)

I'd be sitting there with my head against the window trying not to vomit and trying to think of ways to kill myself before we got to school, and Adam would always sit next to me and poke/annoy me on the way to school. I guess we became good friends after we had Ms. Kelley's College Comp. class together. I'd always be nervously picking at my fingers and then bleeding almost every day...."You're bleeding again?!" Nothing like a friendship founded in severe social anxiety and blood!
Pissed Me Off When: Oh, soooooooo many times! He's my best friend....so naturally he's pissed me off more than anyone!
Strangest Physical Feature: The magic dislocating shoulder
Almost died when: The Nurse made a mistake and gave him way too much morphine when they were putting his magic shoulder back in place. He passed out but lived to tell about it.

So, we're at the Billy Bragg concert at the Fine Line with Jay and Denise about a month ago. We got seperated from Rachel in the crowd at the beginning of the show. After the show, we start looking for her as the crowd clears out. Nothing! We can't find her! We look all arounf the Fine Line, and outside on the street. We walk to my car to see if she went there. Nothing! We drive around and go back to the Fine Line. Then I drove the route I thought she may have walked home. We went to her apartment and buzzed her. No answer. Now I'm freaking out! Then I decide to go back to my place and check my cell phone to see if she called....she did. Rachel had left the concert early because the wasn't feeling well, and got a ride home from a friend. MarxistGopher Update - Jill Sobule

Okay, so I wasn't able to talk Butler into playing Axis & Allies, but we did end up playing a little baseball. And damn did it feel good to get out there and swing the bat again. It's been a while. Surprisingly, I could still hit a little, although I was just throwing the ball up to myself. If someone was pitching there's no way i could have made contact. It was a good time and beautiful weather. (hope you don't hate me Butler after that profile I did of you. Someone said it was a little mean. Wait until they see theirs! hahaha[evil laugh])

So no game, but we watched 'Fever Pitch' and ate Ben & Jerry's instead. I like 'Fever Pitch' more and more each time I see it(3 times). And no, it's not because it's a romantic comedy, Its about a guy thats so obsessed with a sports team his life totally revolves around it. Come on, how could I not like that movie! But I think I really like it because the Red Sox finally come through for him and win a World Series. It helps me to fantasize about the Gophers dramatic run to the Rose Bowl! Well, I can dream can't I.....I mean, it has to happen some day...doesn't it?

But what I really wanted to post about today was Jill Sobule. I saw her when she opened for Billy Bragg at the Fine Line last month. I'd never heard of her before that and wasn't really expecting too much....but she was great! I really enjoyed her set and I've been meaning to search the web for some of her songs, especially "Hall of Fame," her hilarous song about Bush. Well, today I finally did that.

So I thought I'd just post a link to a bunch of her songs to try to spread the Jill Sobule love, if you will. Most of the links will have the lyrics or something explaining something about the song on there. If you're only going to give a few of them a shot, I recommend these few to get you started. These are my favorites in no particular order(okay, a little order)...

-Hall of Fame, the hilarious song about Bush. She opened the concert with this one and sucked me in. I think it's better live. Although I think most of her stuff sounded better live. Damn, I hope I'm not discouraging you from listening now, it really is great on the album too....just better live....I think it's the crowd.

Personal Profile #1 "Butler"

Jason Butler

Nicknames: Sly, Butler, Smelly Jason

Years Known: Roughly 12

Origin Story:
I met Butler back in Jr. High, at Hosterman Middle School. That must have been in 7th grade, in about 1993-1994. Butler moved and went to Sandburg the next year. When we started High School at Cooper in 1995 we were in the same home room, with good old Ron Chagnon. Anyway, we became friends Freshmen year of High School. High School was the days of snow football in the empty lot across the street from my house after school almost every day with Scott Burdick and Brian Hawks. Ah, memories.
Pissed Me Off When: He was supposed to buy Flogging Molly concert tickets for us the week before the show. The day before the show he tells me he never bought the tickets, but by then it was already sold out. I wan't able to get tickets and missed the show. Thanks a lot Butler! :(
Strangest Physical Feature: Constantly changing hair colors and styles. Oh, and a shout out for that great hat covered in pins!
Odor Factor: Can be high at times...8
Likelyhood to belch and/or fart in your presence(1-10): 7
#1 Activity we've done over the years: Well, I'd have to say playing sports in general is probably number 1 with all those years of football and then all those years of weekly basketball lately. But a close second would probably be board games. Whenever Butler could come over to my house in high school(after the walk across a semi-frozen Twin Lake usually) he'd spend the night and we'd play board games all night. I've got a great photo of us, probably from around 1995, with me in my Jurassic Park pajamas, playing chess in my living room with a large image of Adoph Hitler on the TV in the backround. Classic!

Friendship Grades:

Reliability: A- (great, except for the ticket incident)
Honesty: A
Conversation: C
Common Interests: C (we have sports and board games)
Closeness: B
Staying Power: A (12 years is a fucking long time)

Overall Friendship Grade: B+

MarxistGopher Update - Monday April 17th, 2006

Yawn, Easter is over...Praise the Lord. I really hate holidays. Everyone is hanging out with their families and all the stores are closed, so I can't even get any errands done. What a waste of a day. The only time holidays are good for anything is when the fall during the week and you get a day off work. But when they fall on a weekend it's an absolute nightmare. I was invited to have Easter dinner at Adam's yesterday though, which I took him up on. Who am I to turn down a free meal....I'm poor. What I also hate about holiday meals is that they always occur at what seems to be lunch time, between 1 and 2. That's a late lunch, it sure ain't dinner. By the time I got home at 4:00 I was already starting to get hungry! I decree that holiday dinners need to be later in the day.

I also had the pleasure of spending the afternoon with Adam's two nephews, 3 and newborn. Wow, children are strange creatures. I couldn't imagine why anyone would want one of those! There is no way I'm EVER having children. Little annoying money pits that will only turn from annoying kids into annoying adults. Give me cats any day!

That's pretty much all I did yesterday. I came home and tried to put some time into The MarxistGopher Report and then watched TV and organized my miniatures. Oh, the miniatures. That's an interesting story, but I'll save that for another post.

Today I'm just sitting around the house watching movies and doing some small crap around my apartment. Butler's scheduled to come around after work today, and we'll probably go toss the baseball around for a while. I'm gonna try to get him to play a game of Axis & Allies Miniatures with me after that, but that could be tough. Apparently I don't have enough geeky friends. Alright, I guess there's not much else to say right now. Just going to try to enjoy my last dy off before the hellish week of work begins anew tomorrow.

I'm Back!

Well, it's been a long time faithful readers(okay, I know no one reads this anymore), but I'm finally back posting on the MarxistGopher Report. Now that the sports season is over I'll have all summer long to try and kill time by posting on the old MarxistGopher. I can't promise that I'll post everyday, but I'll try to keep the site updated at least a few times a week.

I have some interesting new ideas for the blog that I hope to start work on this week.

-Personal Profiles (with the success of the Basketball profiles from a year ago I've had requests to bring something like that back again. So I will be posting profiles of all my friends and aquaintences over the next few months) I can only hope they will be as entertaining as the Basketball profiles were. (Oh, and don't worry I will be keeping the old archives on the site so you can still go bck and read those great old Basketball profiles if the mood strikes you.

-A Movie Database
(I'm not exactly sure yet what form this will take, but I will be adding a database of all the movies I own and ratings of those movies. I dont think I'll be doing full reviews of every movie though, simplu because its too damn time consuming. Sorry.

-MarxistGopher Updates (This will probably be the most uninteresting new aspect of MarxistGopher Report to most of you. It will just be my daily/semi-daily rants about whatever's going on in my life and whatever I feel like talking about at the moment I decide to post.)

The Two Americas

By Marjorie Cohn
t r u t h o u t | Perspective

Saturday 03 September 2005

Last September, a Category 5 hurricane battered the small island of Cuba with 160-mile-per-hour winds. More than 1.5 million Cubans were evacuated to higher ground ahead of the storm. Although the hurricane destroyed 20,000 houses, no one died.

What is Cuban President Fidel Castro's secret? According to Dr. Nelson Valdes, a sociology professor at the University of New Mexico, and specialist in Latin America, "the whole civil defense is embedded in the community to begin with. People know ahead of time where they are to go."

"Cuba's leaders go on TV and take charge," said Valdes. Contrast this with George W. Bush's reaction to Hurricane Katrina. The day after Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, Bush was playing golf. He waited three days to make a TV appearance and five days before visiting the disaster site. In a scathing editorial on Thursday, the New York Times said, "nothing about the president's demeanor yesterday - which seemed casual to the point of carelessness - suggested that he understood the depth of the current crisis."

"Merely sticking people in a stadium is unthinkable" in Cuba, Valdes said. "Shelters all have medical personnel, from the neighborhood. They have family doctors in Cuba, who evacuate together with the neighborhood, and already know, for example, who needs insulin."

They also evacuate animals and veterinarians, TV sets and refrigerators, "so that people aren't reluctant to leave because people might steal their stuff," Valdes observed.

After Hurricane Ivan, the United Nations International Secretariat for Disaster Reduction cited Cuba as a model for hurricane preparation. ISDR director Salvano Briceno said, "The Cuban way could easily be applied to other countries with similar economic conditions and even in countries with greater resources that do not manage to protect their population as well as Cuba does."

Our federal and local governments had more than ample warning that hurricanes, which are growing in intensity thanks to global warming, could destroy New Orleans. Yet, instead of heeding those warnings, Bush set about to prevent states from controlling global warming, weaken FEMA, and cut the Army Corps of Engineers' budget for levee construction in New Orleans by $71.2 million, a 44 percent reduction.

Bush sent nearly half our National Guard troops and high-water Humvees to fight in an unnecessary war in Iraq. Walter Maestri, emergency management chief for Jefferson Paris in New Orleans, noted a year ago, "It appears that the money has been moved in the president's budget to handle homeland security and the war in Iraq."

An Editor and Publisher article Wednesday said the Army Corps of Engineers "never tried to hide the fact that the spending pressures of the war in Iraq, as well as homeland security - coming at the same time as federal tax cuts - was the reason for the strain," which caused a slowdown of work on flood control and sinking levees.

"This storm was much greater than protection we were authorized to provide," said Alfred C. Naomi, a senior project manager in the New Orleans district of the corps.

Unlike in Cuba, where homeland security means keeping the country secure from deadly natural disasters as well as foreign invasions, Bush has failed to keep our people safe. "On a fundamental level," Paul Krugman wrote in yesterday's New York Times, "our current leaders just aren't serious about some of the essential functions of government. They like waging war, but they don't like providing security, rescuing those in need or spending on prevention measures. And they never, ever ask for shared sacrifice."

During the 2004 election campaign, vice presidential candidate John Edwards spoke of "the two Americas." It seems unfathomable how people can shoot at rescue workers. Yet, after the beating of Rodney King aired on televisions across the country, poor, desperate, hungry people in Watts took over their neighborhoods, burning and looting. Their anger, which had seethed below the surface for so long, erupted. That's what's happening now in New Orleans. And we, mostly white, people of privilege, rarely catch a glimpse of this other America.

"I think a lot of it has to do with race and class," said Rev. Calvin O. Butts III, pastor of the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem. "The people affected were largely poor people. Poor, black people."

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin reached a breaking point Thursday night. "You mean to tell me that a place where you probably have thousands of people that have died and thousands more that are dying every day, that we can't figure out a way to authorize the resources we need? Come on, man!"

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff had boasted earlier in the day that FEMA and other federal agencies have done a "magnificent job" under the circumstances.

But, said, Nagin, "They're feeding the people a line of bull, and they are spinning and people are dying. Get off your asses and let's do something!"

When asked about the looting, the mayor said that except for a few "knuckleheads," it is the result of desperate people trying to find food and water to survive.

Nagin blamed the outbreak of violence and crime on drug addicts who have been cut off from their drug supplies, wandering the city, "looking to take the edge off their jones."

When Hurricane Ivan hit Cuba, no curfew was imposed; yet, no looting or violence took place. Everyone was in the same boat.

Fidel Castro, who has compared his government's preparations for Hurricane Ivan to the island's long-standing preparations for an invasion by the United States, said, "We've been preparing for this for 45 years."

On Thursday, Cuba's National Assembly sent a message of solidarity to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. It says the Cuban people have followed closely the news of the hurricane damage in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, and the news has caused pain and sadness. The message notes that the hardest hit are African-Americans, Latino workers, and the poor, who still wait to be rescued and taken to secure places, and who have suffered the most fatalities and homelessness. The message concludes by saying that the entire world must feel this tragedy as its own.

NCAA bans Indian mascots, nicknames from postseason events

INDIANAPOLIS — The NCAA banned the use of American Indian mascots by sports teams during its postseason tournaments, but will not prohibit them otherwise.

The NCAA's executive committee decided this week the organization did not have the authority to bar Indian mascots by individual schools, committee chairman Walter Harrison said Friday.

Nicknames or mascots deemed "hostile or abusive'' would not be allowed by teams on their uniforms or other clothing beginning with any NCAA tournament after Feb. 1, said Harrison, the University of Hartford's president.

"What each institution decides to do is really its own business'' outside NCAA championship events, he said.

At least 18 schools have mascots the NCAA would deem "hostile or abusive,'' including Florida State's Seminole and Illinois' Illini. The full list of schools was not immediately released.

Not all schools with Indian-related nicknames would be on that list. NCAA officials said some schools using the Warrior nickname do not use Indian symbols and would not be affected.

The NCAA two years ago recommended that schools determine for themselves whether the Indian depictions were offensive.

Among the schools to change nicknames in recent years over such concerns were St. John's (from Redmen to Red Storm) and Marquette (from Warriors to Golden Eagles).

The NCAA plans to ban schools using Indian nicknames from hosting postseason events. Harrison said schools with such mascots that have already been selected as tournament sites would be asked to cover any offensive logos.

Such logos also would be prohibited at postseason games on cheerleader and band uniforms starting in 2008.

CNN Suspends Novak After He Walks Off Set

NEW YORK -- CNN suspended commentator Robert Novak indefinitely after he swore and walked off the set Thursday during a debate with Democratic operative James Carville.

The live exchange during CNN's "Inside Politics" came during a discussion of Florida's Senate campaign. CNN correspondent Ed Henry noted when it was over that he had been about to ask Novak about his role in the investigation of the leak of a CIA officer's identity.

A CNN spokeswoman, Edie Emery, called Novak's behavior "inexcusable and unacceptable." Novak apologized to CNN, and CNN was apologizing to viewers, she said.

"We've asked Mr. Novak to take some time off," she said.

A telephone message at Novak's office was not immediately returned Thursday.

Carville and Novak were both trying to speak while they were handicapping the GOP candidacy of Katherine Harris. Novak said the opposition of the Republican establishment in Florida might not be fatal for her.

"Let me just finish, James, please," Novak continued. "I know you hate to hear me, but you have to."

Carville, addressing the camera, said: "He's got to show these right wingers that he's got a backbone, you know. It's why the Wall Street Journal editorial page is watching you. Show 'em that you're tough."

"Well, I think that's bull---- and I hate that," Novak replied. "Just let it go."

As moderator Henry stepped in to ask Carville a question, Novak walked off the set.

Only two weeks ago, CNN executives defended their decision to keep Novak on the air during the ongoing probe into the revelation of CIA officer Valerie Plame's identity. In a July 2003 newspaper column, Novak identified Plame, the wife of administration critic and former U.S. ambassador Joseph Wilson, as a CIA operative.

Wilson has said the leak of his wife's name was an attempt by the administration to discredit him. Two other reporters connected to the case openly fought the revelation of their sources, and Judith Miller of The New York Times has been jailed for refusing to cooperate with prosecutors.

Novak has repeatedly refused to comment about his role in the federal investigation.

After Novak walked off on Thursday, Henry said that Novak had been told before the segment that he was going to be asked on air about the CIA case.

"I'm hoping that we will be able to ask him about that in the future," Henry said.

Novak has been a longtime contributor to CNN, taking the conservative point of view during the just-canceled "Crossfire" show.

Some pull 'Doonesbury' over Rove moniker

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (AP) -- It may be President Bush's nickname for key political adviser Karl Rove, but some editors don't think it belongs in their newspapers.

About a dozen papers objected to Tuesday's and Wednesday's "Doonesbury" comic strips, and some either pulled or edited them.

The strips refer to Rove, the White House deputy chief of staff, as "Turd Blossom."

Lee Salem, editor at Kansas City-based Universal Press Syndicate, which distributes the strip to 1,400 papers, said the complaints from 10 to 12 newspapers weren't unexpected. As opposed to other times when editors have objected to Doonesbury content, the syndicate did not send out replacement strips.

"Given the coverage of Karl Rove, we thought it was appropriate, especially given the history of the strip," Salem said.

Doonesbury's creator, Garry Trudeau, has infuriated some editors over the years with his language, images and political themes. An e-mail to Trudeau wasn't immediately returned Tuesday.

Salem said that since newspapers don't have to notify the syndicate when they choose to remove a strip, it's impossible to know how many papers ran Tuesday's comic.

In the strip, Bush and an aide are lamenting the problems the administration has had over allegations that Rove leaked the name of a CIA officer to reporters.

Bush says, "Karl's sure been earnin' his nickname lately."

The unnamed aide says, "Boy Genius? I'm not so sure sir ..."

Bush then says, "Hey Turd Blossom! Get in here."

The term is said to be one of several nicknames Bush uses for Rove, one of his closest allies and who is widely credited for Bush's election in 2000 and re-election in 2004. The mainstream U.S. media have rarely mentioned the nickname, but it has gained traction in the international press and on the Internet.

Among those with concerns was the Providence (Rhode Island) Journal, whose editors removed the offensive word from the strip's final panel.

"I didn't think (taking out the word) hurt it," Executive Editor Joel Rawson said. "I would prefer to run the strip and if we can edit it, that's fine."

Other papers, such as The Kansas City Star, removed the strip entirely, replacing it with an older one.

"We thought it was in bad taste and probably unclear to a lot of people why we would be using the term," said Steve Shirk, the Star's managing editor/news.

Whitehouse says won't hand over some Roberts papers

WASHINGTON - The White House said on Tuesday it will refuse to hand over to the Senate some documents related to Supreme Court nominee John Roberts' government legal work, a sign of a possible battle ahead with Senate Democrats.

Senate Democrats, who have demanded access to relevant information as the confirmation process gets under way, expressed disappointment and said the documents being held back could hold information necessary to evaluate Roberts.

"A blanket statement that entire groups of documents are off limits is both premature and ill advised," said a letter to Bush from eight Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

White House spokesman Scott McClellan said the administration would make public 62,000-65,000 pages of documents concerning Roberts' work during the administration of Republican President Ronald Reagan.

But he said the Justice Department will withhold internal memos generated from 1989 to 1993, during Roberts' work as deputy solicitor general during the presidency of George Bush, father of the current president and a fellow Republican.

Roberts wrote a legal brief during this period on the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision legalizing a woman's right to abortion, in which he said "we continue to believe that Roe was wrongly decided and should be overruled."

Senate Judiciary Chairman Arlen Specter, a Pennsylvania Republican, said the White House had decided to hold back some documents and that Ed Gillespie, President Bush's point man on the nomination, informed him of it on Monday.

Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, which will hold confirmation hearings, said he hoped the White House move was not intended to hinder the Senate's consideration of Roberts' nomination.

"There will be additional documents we ask for," he said.

Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Edward Kennedy said in his 42 years on the Judiciary committee, "we have received many internal Justice Department documents as least at sensitive as these, even for confirmation proceedings that don't come close to the importance of a Supreme Court appointment."

Specter said it was premature to talk about documents but noted, "I'd have to be an ostrich not to be concerned."

LINE OF ATTACK?

McClellan accused Democrats of demanding documents as part of a line of attack prepared even before Roberts' nomination.

The White House cited an agreement in 2002 by seven former solicitor generals in declaring the internal memos protected by attorney-client privilege. The solicitor general argues cases on behalf of the U.S. government before the Supreme Court.

Releasing the documents, McClellan said, "would have a chilling effect on the ability of the solicitor generals to receive candid, honest, and thorough advice from their attorneys during the decision-making process."

He said he did not know how many documents might be in question.

Roberts spent a fifth day visiting with lawmakers before his confirmation hearings.

Partisan bickering also broke out over their timing.

Specter said he and Leahy, despite numerous talks, have yet to agree on when to start. Some Democrats favor mid-September; some Republicans are pushing to have committee members end their summer recess early and start in late August.

Specter, who has scheduling power as chairman, said he wants the full Senate to vote on Roberts no later than Sept. 29, so he could be seated before the Supreme Court begins its new term on Oct. 3.

McClellan said all documents from Roberts' 1981-1982 tenure as special assistant to the attorney general during the Reagan administration would be sent to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

They were also being made available to the media in a special reading room outside Washington later on Tuesday.

The administration also agreed to work with the Reagan presidential library in California to release documents relating to Roberts' work in the White House counsel's office from 1982 to 1986.

Roberts, a federal appeals court judge for the past two years, has received a generally upbeat reception on Capitol Hill since being nominated last Tuesday to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

Democrats Watch in Horror as Union Base Falls Apart

by David Usborne

The American labor movement was on the brink of civil war last night as two major unions, including the Teamsters, prepared to leave the country's main labor congress, the AFL-CIO, amid bitter recriminations over its leadership and failure to reverse a steep membership decline.

Hostilities broke into the open on Sunday when four large unions announced that they were boycotting the annual convention of the AFL-CIO, which got under way in Chicago yesterday. It then emerged that two of the four were likely also to withdraw from the alliance altogether.

The two departing unions, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and the Service Employees International Union, have 1.4 and 1.8 million members respectively. Their revolt represents a body blow - both in morale terms and financially - to the AFL-CIO and was being described as the worst rift in the labor movement since 1930.

It risks further undermining union strength in the United States which has been in decline for decades, eroded by dwindling membership rolls, the effects of automation, the relentless rush to improve productivity, and the ramifications of globalization and increased world competition.

The AFL, the American Federation of Labor, and the CIO, the Congress of Industrial Organizations, broke away from one another in the 1930s. However, they merged again in 1955 and this year's convention was meant to be a celebration of that 50-year marriage. In all that time, the AFL-CIO, roughly equivalent to Britain's TUC, has been the voice of organized labor in the country.

But while roughly one in three workers in the private sector belonged to a union in America half a century ago, only 8 per cent do so today. The relentlessness of that decline and the political environment now makes union power still less credible and has given rise to the tensions of today.

A splintering of the labor movement also bodes ill for the Democratic Party, which for generations has depended on labor leaders to galvanize voters as well as raise funds for candidates for the White House and Congress. Last year, almost a quarter of all the votes cast in the presidential race came from union households, a majority of which supported the Democrat, John Kerry.

Part of the battle is being fought over John Sweeney, leader of the AFL-CIO for 10 years, who is expected to win re-election this week. Activists have been fighting to have him removed, arguing he has failed to re-energize the movement.

Seven unions now belong to an ad hoc grouping - the "Change to Win Coalition" - opposed to Mr Sweeney's re-election. All may end up breaking ranks. They are demanding new leadership and more funds to allow individual unions to merge and launch new membership drives.

"The AFL-CIO, to its credit, has listened to us. But in the end, they have not heard us. The language of reform has been adopted, but not the substance ... We have reached a point where our differences have become unresolvable," said Anna Burger, the chairman of Change to Win.

Backers of Mr Sweeney, 71, have come close to branding their departing brethren as traitors to the cause. "Today is a tragic day because those that left the house of labor ... are weakening our house and shame on them," growled Leo Gerard, president of the United Steelworkers, which will remain in the fold.

Others contended that the dissidents, far from helping, were playing into the hands of those who would like to see the movement grow weaker still. "I think the only one who wins from this is George Bush and his minions who are trying to weaken labor unions," said Gerald McEntee, president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.
