So....whatever you want to discuss....

I have feelings about the latest Star Wars, which we saw last night. It was certainly the best of the new three, and I enjoyed it very much and would recommend it. Ewan McGregor was awesome.

But I can't get over the premise. The thing that sent Anakin over the edge to the Dark Side was worrying about the possibility of Padme dying in childbirth. This is a land where they routinely make half-man/half-machine creatures, and a woman still has to worry about dying in childbirth?! Also, Padme apparently didn't have enough prenatal care to know she was carrying twins. I realize that one has to suspend disbelief, but this is completely inconsistent with everything else about Star Wars.

Or, to reframe the question: Is it the galaxy far, far away that is so patriarchal that a man can get all of his limbs lopped off and his carcass burnt to a crisp, and STILL manange to become the evil ruler of the galaxy, but a woman can't bear children without fear of death, or is it our much closer galaxy (and society) that is so patriarchal that we will accept that without question??

Thanks, I feel much better now...

Yes! I'm so excited that somebody finally posted on Friday Feelings I don't know what to say.

As far as the illogical patriarchy in Star Wars goes...I haven't seen the movie yet, but I am a white male 18-35...ahh, life is good ;)

So, it was much better then episodes 1 and 2 eh? That's very good news. I'm very much looking forward to seeing it now. How would you say it compares to the 3 originals? I liked Episode 2 better than Return of the Jedi. So my rankings of the Star Wars films goes something like this...
V-The Empire Strikes Back
IV-A New Hope
II-Attack of the Clones
VI-Return of the Jedi
I-The Phantom Menace (by far the worst)

I'm terrified to go see it anytime soon. I hate large movie crowds, so I'll probably wait until next week before I attempt it.
